At the beginning of March, we hosted our first ever Lenten Soul Food Fundraising Dinner. We packed over 60 donors, friends, and family into our volunteer houses to serve them authentic soul food. All the dishes were prepared by a family from the neighborhood that we have known for over 10 years.
Each year, the DC house is assigned a Dominican student brother who spends a semester with us ministering to the families we help. This is how Bro. Peter Gautsch, OP, came to know A Simple House. When the election of Pope Francis was announced 2 years ago, Bro. Peter and I were riding around delivering lasagnas. We arrived at one family’s home and found them watching Pope Francis on TV! →
Our final spring break weekend brought students from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln Newman Center and a sibling of one of our full time volunteers to Kansas City.
Students from Louisiana Tech in Ruston, Louisiana, have brought joy, a good work ethic, and delicious Cajun food to A Simple House each March for the past four years. During their long weekend in Kansas City, they continued a home-repair project for a couple we serve. The project was started by the group from Ball State and will be completed by our last group. Stay tuned for some before & after photos! In addition the that project, several of the students installed a floor and insulated the first-level of A Simple House.
Three students and a campus minister from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, were greeted by a snowstorm as they rolled into Kansas City on February 28th.
Hosting spring break groups provides an opportunity to share the work and community life of A Simple House with college students. They are immersed in our prayer schedule, ministry, special projects, and the general Kansas City splendor. Each day begins with Mass and Morning Prayer before splitting up into work and ministry groups. Typically, we complete a morning and afternoon session before evening activity. Activities include Vespers and supper with the Community of the Lamb, attending a young-adult event, and a “dash-tour” of KC attractions.
