Spring Break KC, Round 1: Ball State University

Three students and a campus minister from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, were greeted by a snowstorm as they rolled into Kansas City on February 28th.

Hosting spring break groups provides an opportunity to share the work and community life of A Simple House with college students. They are immersed in our prayer schedule, ministry, special projects, and the general Kansas City splendor. Each day begins with Mass and Morning Prayer before splitting up into work and ministry groups. Typically, we complete a morning and afternoon session before evening activity. Activities include Vespers and supper with the Community of the Lamb, attending a young-adult event, and a “dash-tour” of KC attractions.

When students come for a spring break experience, they bring their gifts to our community, too. One Ball State student taught us her fool-proof cookie baking method, which was used to make dozens of cookies for ministry and community events. Others combined their painting experience to complete a room in A Simple House. All of them brought the joy and sincerity of Christ to our neighbors when we went on home-visits and did ministry.

On their final night, the students prepared a traditional Midwestern meal for the group arriving from Louisiana Tech. That day happened to be a Friday in Lent. Coming up with a meatless Midwestern meal was a bit tough, but they prepared a wonderful vegetarian chili, cinnamon rolls, cornbread, macaroni and cheese, and a “fluff salad”.
