It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

“We’re from the Church handing out Christmas bags!” Our volunteers yell when knocking on apartment doors each Christmas.
Every year, we deliver around 275 bags of Christmas treats to some of the poorest neighborhoods in DC and Kansas City. The bags are offered as a cheerful holiday gift in the hopes of brightening someone’s day.
By handing out Christmas bags, we are able to meet new people and pray with them. Even though giving a Christmas bag to a family is a nice gesture, praying with them is a particularly beautiful way to offer love and friendship . Prayer makes us different than delivery people. We aren’t just handing out a bag, but giving of ourselves to serve them in prayer. Sometimes whole families gather to share their intentions and pray with us.

That being said, we do try to make our bags as exciting as possible. Our bags feature a variety of goodies, a religious gift, information about A Simple House and an invitation to visit our church. This year in DC our bags included items such as hot chocolate, oranges, candy canes, marshmallows and a pineapple. We like to add something especially exciting each year. This year in DC it was sugar cookie mix, cookie cutters, frosting and sprinkles!

Each year we have groups decorate the bags, pack them and deliver them. Catherine, one of our former volunteers came back to help us pack bags this year!

Jimmy and Teresa inspected the fruit before it went into the bags.
