Retreat Week – 2015

Each February, Simple House volunteers travel to Conception Abbey in Conception, Missouri, for a week-long silent retreat. This is a good time for both communities to come together, share experiences, and re-focus hearts and minds on Jesus. Father Adam leads the retreats, and many of his talks can be found on our blog and our YouTube channel.

This year’s retreat was book-ended by four days in Kansas City. Highlights from that time include two completed jigsaw puzzles, Arthur Bryant’s barbecue, Filming Day (more videos to come!) and The Super Feast.

While at Conception, volunteers attended four conferences given by Fr. Adam. They also participated in the Liturgy of the Hours and Eucharist with the monks, explored the grounds, and spent time reading and praying. Silence was lifted for one hour during supper. We entertained Father Albert Bruecken (or perhaps he entertained us) most evenings, while Eric Kral, a former full-time volunteer, joined us on our last night at the monastery.

On our final day, we took a morning field-trip to the monastery of the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in Clyde, Missouri. The monastery has a beautiful chapel and a reliquary with over 500 relics.
